Last winter I read Drawdown in an effort to better understand the current landscape of solutions to climate change, and specifically how urbanism fits into it. I was disappointed, though not entirely surprised, to learn that mode shift and redensification are not the silver bullet that will save us from our catastrophic climate future.
Project Drawdown presents 100 distinct solutions to climate change, from technologies like tidal-energy systems to social changes like better access to family planning for all. They are ranked by the gigatons of CO2 (or equivalents like methane) they would prevent from being in the atmosphere in the year 2050, compared to a baseline scenario. The project models several different scenarios of adoption for the solutions, but regardless of the particulars, urbanism-related solutions rank nowhere near the top.
In comparison, the top ranked solutions are projected to impact closer to 100 gigatons of carbon, with the full list of solutions adding up to around 1000 gigatons. The two and a half gigatons from improving bicycle infrastructure really feels like less than a drop in the bucket :(
Part of the reason the numbers look quite so dismal for these solutions is because of the timescale Drawdown is looking at. Since the scientific consensus is pretty clear that now is the critical time for averting climate disaster, Drawdown focuses on the impact solutions can have in the next thirty years, as opposed to a longer window like 100 or 200 years. Many of these transportation mode shifts rely on redensification, for which the residential living patterns and necessary infrastructure will take decades to be fully realized. Compare this with something like renewable energy generation, which in many cases can start replacing carbon emitting sources as soon as the wires are connected.
This framework of immediacy really shifted my thinking on electric cars in particular. While long term I do believe that mode shift away from cars is fully necessary for us to create a sustainable society, in the short term there are more accessible solutions. We can far more realistically decrease carbon emissions by having 70% of urban VMT be electric by 2026, than we might by decreasing pure VMT by even half that amount in the same time. I still feel conflicted about how electric cars might prolong our toxic relationship with single-occupancy vehicles and the resultant sprawl, but the necessity for more immediate emissions reductions is hard to argue with.
Even aside from the time scale though, the transportation sector as a whole just isn’t the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Estimates vary, but according to the Drawdown Review, an update the Project published as an addendum to the 2017 book, transportation accounts for only 14% of global emissions
By some estimates, the fraction could be closer to 28% for the US, which does change the calculus a bit.
Regardless of how the solutions rank, one thing that Drawdown makes clear is that all of these solutions will be necessary to attain a more sustainable society. Even the top single solution contributes less than 10% of the total projected potential gigatons avoided by 2050. Reaching drawdown, the point at which the amount of carbon in the atmosphere will begin to decrease (as opposed to skyrocket as it has been for the last century), will require change in all sectors, and I will keep pushing for that change in urban transportation and the density necessary to support it.
